The crap included with many of these free programs is, unfortunately, just waiting to be installed. It seems like the only conclusion to be drawn (at least with freeware) is to expect crapware unless otherwise proven to be safe and always proceed with caution when downloading anything what so ever off the internet.
I started using a PC over 20 years ago and it seemed there were far "more" trustworthy sites, albeit fewer sites versus now days. One thing is for sure, there is a tremendous amount of crapware just waiting to be installed on PCs for all of those unsuspecting people. Also, that Ninite program mentioned sounds like something interesting to check out. I do like some replies here such as using 7-Zip and installing programs, such as Img Burn off-line. I am not familiar with creating an iso via the command line and i'd have to learn how to do that. This morning I found that Malwarebytes Premium had flagged the installer as malware. Of course, I accepted and saw dozens of pup files from this downloaded version of ImgBurn. Ive used ImgBurn for years and have always rated it as a great utility. It can burn Audio CDs from any file type supported via DirectShow / ACM - including AAC, APE, FLAC, M4A, MP3, MP4, MPC, OGG, PCM, WAV, WMA, and WV.
However, a subsequent scan of the PC indicated there "was" potentially unwanted programs included and offered to quarantine them for me. I haven't had a lot of time to play with Img Burn, but I will say again that my scan from Malware Bytes initially identified the download as safe from.
